The Other One
Dell XPS One 27
Don’t worry, what you’re about to read is the natural progression of our obsession with touchscreens. However, I wouldn’t mind a cessation of such things. This is not the first touch All-in-One (AiO) I have encountered, but Windows 8 (Win8) makes this review something new and little novel.
ALITTLE EXCESSIVE
Dear sirs, a touch interface on a handheld device makes sense. But when your screen towers above you at 27in, perhaps is it time to reconsider the merits of being able to point at what you want. This is particularly if the interface itself was designed with smaller gadgets in mind. There is the conundrum that is presented here. I personally happen to like Win8. Conversely, as it is presented in this form, I wonder if the change is worth it. Perhaps it is time that manufacturers stop and take a closer look at what they are making. Big touchscreens eventually surrender to the convenience of a keyboard and mouse combination.
EXCESS IS GOOD
I run the risk of giving a bad impression of this monolithic device. An occurrence that would be wholly unfair to Dell as it has genuinely built a beautiful machine. Aside from the minor quibble of having to sit right next to a bright LED panel, there is little to complain about. The brightness of the panel brings out the best in colours. This is an obvious fact that makes watching movies extremely pleasurable. Some saturation happens in static images but modern movies are usually so dark that a bright screen is practically the only way to watch them without losing one’s mind.
STILL NOT EXCESSIVE ENOUGH
A concession to the AiO concept is the lack of a proper graphics card. This is a small issue for the general public, which is a major one for those who want better and more efficient methods of procrastination. Attempting to run Skyrim at maximum settings was perhaps somewhat ambitious. However, running World of Tanks at full screen managed to drop the frame rate to single digits, which is unacceptable no matter what you expect out of a computer. It would be easy to attribute this to the GeForce 640M being unable to handle the 2580 x 1600 resolution that I was asking of it.
