LET’S GET PHYSICAL

Capable of giving a city trader palpitations, this is the revamped BlackBerry addicts have been baying for.  How does it fare in a world of giant touchscreens?

« Our thumbs confirm that the Q10 has BlackBerry’s biggest and best keyboard yet and, after an eon of insubstantial haptic touchscreen feedback, using it feels really good. Excellent word predictions, a million handy shortcuts and BlackBerry 10 OS’ nippy multi-tasking will turn you into a messaging god.

« At 3.1 inches, the Q10’s touchscreen is undeniably tiny. You won’t be watching movies on this. However, it’s a razor-sharp, responsive and colourful AMOLED effort, and its pokiness spells great news for battery life: low power drain combined with the 2100mAh battery means the Q10 will still be kicking after days of hiring/firing.

« The Q10 runs the new BB10 OS, and, even on the small screen, we’re impressed with its minimalist gesture-based interface. At its centre is the powerful unified messaging hub that lets you access everything from texts and emails to BBM messages and Twitter, in one giant pigeon-hole-on-steroids. Android and iOS don’t come close.

«BlackBerry World remains painfully short of quality apps. Hooray for Angry Birds Star Wars, WhatsApp and Skype, but still no Instagram or Google Maps? Come on, guys: we won’t wait forever.

«Tech 3.1in, 720x720, 330ppi, Super AMOLED //  1.5GHz dual-core // 2GB RAM  // 8MP rear, 2MP front   //  16GB, microSD (up to 64GB)   // 119.6x67x10.4mm   // 139 g

The key(board) to happiness
Work Inbox bailing If you’re used to touchscreen keyboards, the Q10 will have  a bit of a learning curve. But even up against brilliant ‘boards with personalised error correction such as SwiftKey, our experience suggests you’ll soon find the  Q10 faster and just as accurate.

Play Gaming shortcuts The keyboard also comes into  its own when gaming, with the likes of Need For Speed: Undercover using keyboard controls for braking and speed boosts. Given the Q10’s smaller screen and NFS’ frenetic action, they’re pretty much essential.
