Lenovo ThinkPad Helix New
A New Lenovo ThinkPad Helix
Lenovo has brought the new ThinkPad Helix into Malaysia, positioning it as a premium product that is supposed to bridge the gap between tablets and notebooks. This is in particular of those who have the need to keep moving about and don’t want to lug around multiple devices. Not to say that convertibles weren’t popular but the pickup of these types of machines hasn’t entirely been overwhelming.
Khoo Hung Chuan, Country General Manager of Lenovo Malaysia, says, “Despite the decline of the global market, Lenovo continues to outgrow the PC market with nearly 8% year-on-year growth. We were successful because we had the right strategy, which we like to call ‘Protect & Attack’, and our company’s strong execution. In keeping with our growth, we are introducing the ThinkPad Helix - the device that we believe will give business professionals two devices in one incredible form factor. It is a high performance, thin and light Ultrabook with a detachable Windows 8 tablet.”
Addressing the usual problems with these sorts of things, the Helix is designed as a high performance Ultrabook; built with a third generation Core i7 processor. Also, unlike other convertibles; this one does not only split from the keyboard but also is able to figuratively ‘flip’ its screen 180-degrees. Lenovo calls this the “rip and flip” concept and it’s quite interesting to look at. With this apparently unique design, the Helix is capable of adapting itself into the same configurations as the Yoga; albeit without the hinge. Reducing moving parts is a good thing as it removes a point of failure, especially if you get a closer look at the docking system. Lenovo will also introduce an LTE enabled version in the near future as well as a Near Field Communications version. This hasn’t progressed beyond a few novelty apps if one refers back to how long ago these innovations came about. All this comes with quite a hefty price tag of RM6,500, which may turn some potential buyers off, but you do get what you pay for here.
