All in with Alcatel

World’s thinnest smartphone now in Malaysia

After years of remaining in the background, Alcatel has returned with what they hope is a substantial offering to the saturated smartphone market. First revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), these phones are aimed firmly at the mid-range market and are considerably tempting. The launch of the phones also coincided with Alcatel’s partnership with Marvel, the other largest comic book publisher.

Naturally, as a result of the collaboration, members of the media who attended the launch were treated to a preview screening of Iron Man 3. Alcatel One Touch Go-to-Market Director, Frederic Fleurance says, “Being part of the Iron Man phenomena is a great thrill for us all at Alcatel One Touch. We are big fans of the franchise and are honoured to be involved. The One Touch Idol is one of our most stylish handsets and is now a genuine film star.”

Alcatel’s One Touch Idol is a 4.7-inch phone with a 1GHz dual-core processor running Android 4.1. The version on sale in Malaysia will feature a dual SIM setup, which is a feature that is apparently very popular this side of the planet.

The Ultra version of the Idol was christened the thinnest smartphone in existence during its debut and still lives up to that title. It packs a dual-core 1.2GHz processor with Android 4.1 into a considerable 5-inch body that is only ab 7mm thick. All of that for only RM1,299.  Unlike the Idol, this version comes with a single SIM configuration to make way for a microSD card expansion slot.

Fans of super thin phones might want to check this out because despite the low price tag it has quite a lot of punch to it. Although, one thing to note is that it lacks an audiojack, which might dampen the mood of anyone who spends a lot of time listening to music.

Later this year will also see the One Touch Scribe HD, a five inch phone with a quad-core processor that is apparently priced for mid-ranged consumers. It will also features a dual SIM configuration, which might mean that it won’t have any expansion capabilities.
