Sony VAIO E17 |
this hulking desktop replacement comes equipped with a Blu-ray drive and a massive, 17.3-inch screen – albeit one that falls just short of full-HD – making it a decent media player. However, despite that, a thoroughly decent seven-hour battery life and a competitive price-tag, a distinct lack of finesse makes it one to avoid. the quadcore Intel Core i7 processor and 8gB of RAM help create a media friendly machine with a screen that delivers decent movie quality, but can’t compete with the more high resolution displays on test. Blu-ray discs loading is reasonably fast by laptop standards and video from them looks just spiffy. the only things that spoil the popcorn experience are slightly fiddly controls and audio that becomes shrill at medium volume, yet is drowned out by the internal fan during quieter scenes. there’s a real sense of power and ability under the hood, along with a spacious 1tB hard drive, but it’s spoiled by poor build. typing on it is a particular chore, as its height off of your desk makes it uncomfortable to use for long periods. Furthermore, the keyboard is a kind of “sheet” of keys that actually pop out of place during intense typing sessions, revealing internal fans whirring beneath – a less-than- encouraging sight. In total the E17 weighs 3.2kg. that’s almost double the weight of comparable Core i7 ultrabooks like the Acer Aspire S3. the spec on offer here for the price is not to be sniffed at, but you can find similar devices which don’t involve such a significant compromise over build quality for not much more money. Bulky and poorly made, the Sony Vaio E17 has the distinct air of a laptop that’s outlived its usefulness.
